What ETIAS is and when you'll need it
ETIAS isn't a visa — it's a mandatory online authorization to enter Schengen-area countries that you need to arrange in advance (approval usually arrives within minutes, but don't leave it to the last day). It starts applying to Moldovan citizens from Q4 2026, costs around €20, and is valid for 3 years. If your trip to Romania or another Schengen country is planned after that date, add getting an ETIAS to your travel prep list.
Do you need medical insurance
For visa-free travel in the Schengen area (including Romania), medical insurance isn't formally mandatory for Moldovan citizens with a biometric passport, but it's strongly recommended — without it, any medical costs abroad are paid out of pocket. For Turkey and Egypt, there's generally no separate mandatory insurance requirement for tourists, but for the same reasons, travel insurance is a sensible precaution either way.
What documents you need at check-in and the border
The basic set is the same for most destinations: a passport valid for at least a few months past your return date (Egypt specifically requires at least 6 months' validity and at least 2 blank pages), a ticket (paper or digital), and any pre-arranged permit or visa where required (Egypt, the UK, and from late 2026, Schengen via ETIAS). Requirements can differ by nationality and change over time — current information for Moldovan citizens should be checked on Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs site (mfa.gov.md).
Passport validity
The general rule for most destinations is that your passport must be valid for at least 3-6 months past your return date (the exact requirement depends on the entry country). Egypt separately confirms a minimum 6-month validity requirement on arrival. Check this well ahead of time — a soon-to-expire passport is the single most common reason for being denied boarding at check-in.
