When to arrive and when check-in opens
Per airport.md's own check-in page, counters open 2-3 hours before departure depending on the airline and close 40 minutes to 1 hour before departure. HiSky and LOT Polish Airlines open check-in 2 hours ahead; most other carriers open 3 hours ahead.
Airlines reserve the right to refuse check-in after the counter closes, regardless of the reason for being late. Passport control and how the terminal is laid out
Per airport.md's terminal map, arrivals and departures zones are separate, each with its own passport control desk, and a Central Hall connects both parts of the building. The terminal has two levels connected by stairs.
For departure you need a passport with a valid visa (if required for your destination) and a ticket, paper or digital. Airport.md recommends checking current visa requirements only through Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs site (mfa.gov.md), since conditions can change.
Cafes, waiting areas and shops
According to the official terminal map, the departures zone has the Plai, Fly Away and Golden Jet restaurants, the Green Cafe coffee shop, the Lumen Craft store, three Duty Free zones and a Wine House. There's also a children's play area.
Passenger reviews on Google Maps (aggregated via Wanderlog, 4.2 out of 5 across more than 10,700 reviews) generally back this up: reviewers praise the power outlets near the seats in the waiting area, a free drinking fountain, and a bronze "Crew" sculpture that's a popular photo spot. On the downside, cafes mostly offer snacks and coffee rather than full meals, and the terminal has no luggage storage for passengers with a long layover.
Connecting through Chisinau airport
Airport.md doesn't have a dedicated page on transit passenger rules — the site directs all document and baggage questions to the airline or tour operator. If your itinerary includes a connection in Chisinau, confirm the transfer conditions directly with the carrier when booking.
What reviews say: the good and the not-so-good
Some reviews across different aggregators note efficient, polite security screening even with only a couple of scanners open, and an overall clean, calm terminal. At the same time, several platforms carry complaints about brusque staff at passport control during peak hours — the experience clearly varies with flight time and how busy the shift is.
The practical takeaway from reviews: build in extra time for check-in and control, especially for morning departures or peak tourist season, and don't count on a full meal in the departures area — eat beforehand if you can.
