Chisinau Airport renamed after Eugen Doga
What changed
On July 16, 2025, the Government of Moldova approved a decision to name Chisinau International Airport after composer Eugen Doga. The full official name is now "Chisinau Eugen Doga International Airport". The decision took effect upon publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova.
Importantly, only the airport's official name changed — its airport code (RMO) stayed the same, so the renaming has no effect on flight search, booking or ticket prices.
Who was Eugen Doga
Eugen Doga (March 1, 1937 — June 3, 2025) was a Moldovan composer, author of more than 200 works for film and theater, dozens of symphonic pieces, romances and waltzes. His famous waltz from the film "My Tender and Gentle Beast" is recognized by UNESCO as one of the 20th century's musical masterpieces, and his music was featured at the opening ceremonies of three Olympic Games — in 1980, 2014 and 2022.
The Moldovan government made the renaming decision about a month and a half after the composer's death, as a tribute to his memory and recognition of his contribution to the country's culture.
How the decision was made
The initiative followed a public petition, supported by Moldovan President Maia Sandu and the composer's family. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Vladimir Bolea said the initiative "honors the memory of Master Eugen Doga, a symbol of our culture", while Prime Minister Dorin Recean noted: "Moldova can generate extraordinary, universal talents."
